The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks Matter

The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks MatterMost skin lesions are harmless. But sometimes, subtle changes in the skin can be an early warning sign that something needs further investigation.

At Medipod Clinics, we are increasingly seeing patients concerned about moles, lumps, discolouration, and skin changes on their feet and lower limbs. Many people are unsure what is normal, what should be monitored, and when they should seek advice.

This August, we are pleased to introduce dermoscopy assessments using our new dermatoscope, helping us examine skin lesions in greater detail and provide reassurance or onward referral where appropriate.

Why Feet Are Often Overlooked

The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks MatterPeople regularly check their face, hands, or arms for skin changes. But the feet are easy to forget. The skin on the feet and lower legs is exposed to constant pressure, friction, sunlight, and trauma over many years. Lesions can develop gradually and may go unnoticed simply because they are difficult to see. This is why routine skin observation is important, especially for lesions that:

  • change in colour
  • increase in size
  • develop irregular borders
  • bleed or crust
  • become painful or irritated
  • suddenly appear different from surrounding skin

Most changes are harmless, but some deserve closer attention.

What Is Dermoscopy?

The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks MatterA dermatoscope is a specialised medical device that allows clinicians to examine skin lesions using magnification and advanced lighting. It helps us look beneath the surface of the skin in far greater detail than with the naked eye alone.

Dermoscopy can assist in assessing:

  • moles
  • pigmented lesions
  • vascular lesions
  • areas of abnormal skin change
  • suspicious or changing marks

The aim is not to alarm patients, but to improve assessment, support early recognition of suspicious changes, and provide reassurance wherever possible.

Harmless or Suspicious?

The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks MatterMany lesions are completely benign and may include:

  • age-related skin changes
  • harmless moles
  • verrucas
  • corns
  • cysts
  • areas of pigmentation

However, some lesions may require monitoring, further investigation, or referral to a specialist. Early assessment is important because changes can sometimes happen gradually and without pain.

A Calm & Professional Approach

The Spot You Shouldn’t Ignore: Why Skin Lesion Checks MatterWe understand that people can feel anxious about skin lesions or worry about “making a fuss.” In many cases, a professional assessment simply provides reassurance and peace of mind.

At Medipod Clinics, our approach is calm, thorough, and patient-focused. We aim to help patients better understand their skin health while ensuring any concerning lesions are appropriately assessed.

Skin Surgery & Ongoing Care

Alongside dermoscopy, Medipod Clinics also provides assessment and management of certain skin lesions, including minor skin surgery where appropriate. This allows us to support patients through both diagnosis and ongoing care when needed.

Don’t Ignore Changes

If you notice a mole, lesion, or area of skin that:

  • looks different
  • has changed over time
  • bleeds
  • becomes irregular
  • concerns you in any way

…it is always worth having it checked. Sometimes reassurance is the best outcome. But early detection can also make an important difference.

Your feet and lower limbs are often the most overlooked areas of the body when it comes to skin health. Dermoscopy allows us to assess lesions in greater detail, helping provide reassurance, identify suspicious changes earlier, and support better long-term care.
