Every Step Counts: Foot Care During and After Cancer
Cancer treatment can affect many parts of the body, but one area that is often overlooked is the feet.
And yet, our feet carry us through everything—appointments, recovery, and the small daily moments that help us feel like ourselves again.
One of the most common and challenging side effects of chemotherapy is peripheral neuropathy. This affects the nerves, particularly in the feet, and can cause tingling, numbness, burning sensations, or a feeling of reduced awareness when walking. For some, it can feel like walking on cotton wool; for others, it can affect balance and confidence.
Neuropathy doesn’t just affect comfort—it affects movement. When sensation changes, people often become more cautious. They may walk less, avoid activities, or feel less steady on their feet. Over time, this can lead to reduced strength, poorer balance, and a loss of independence.
While some symptoms improve after chemotherapy ends, nerve recovery can be slow and, in some cases, incomplete. That’s why early awareness and support are so important.
Alongside neuropathy, many people also experience:

- Dry or fragile skin
- Nail changes
- Increased sensitivity
- A higher risk of infections
These changes can make everyday activities more difficult, but they are often manageable with the right care.
Simple steps can make a big difference. Checking your feet daily, keeping the skin moisturised, wearing supportive footwear, and seeking early advice can help prevent complications and maintain comfort.
At Medipod Clinics, we take a holistic approach to recovery. As well as podiatry care, we work closely with Alison Preston, our Health Educator, who supports patients with guidance around wellbeing, lifestyle, and recovery during and after treatment. This joined-up approach helps people feel more supported and better equipped to manage changes in their body.
Hydroxy Therapy
We also offer hydroxy therapy as a supportive treatment. This works by helping to reduce oxidative stress in the body and neutralise free radicals, which can increase during chemotherapy. By supporting the body’s natural healing processes, hydroxy therapy may help reduce some of the effects of treatment and support recovery.
For those going through or recovering from cancer, additional support can make a real difference. Organisations such as Together Against Cancer provide valuable guidance, community, and practical help for patients and families. If you are able to, supporting charities like this through awareness or donations helps ensure that more people can access the care and encouragement they need during a difficult time.
Recovery doesn’t happen all at once—it happens step by step.
And sometimes, something as simple as looking after your feet can help you move forward with more comfort, confidence, and control.
If you or someone you know is experiencing changes in their feet during or after cancer treatment, you don’t have to manage it alone.
